Limewire Setup

Limewire is the latest and most popular web site for downloading music and videos.  When the program is installed, its default settings can bring our network to a crawl.  Limewire is a file sharing system.  When a user downloads a song to his/her computer, other users can then upload that very song from a computer in Sonora.  The program automatically sets an option that permits people worldwide to upload at the fastest possible bandwidth.  Our customers MUST change this option, or we will have to restrict your bandwidth from our servers.  From the main menu of Limewire, click on the Tools menu.  Click on the first small picture below to see the Limewire screen.  Be sure and move the Upload Bandwidth setting all the way to the left which restricts worldwide users from uploading from your computer.  Also, be sure and uncheck the setting that allows worldwide users to download partial songs.

The second setting that must be changed affects the behavior of Limewire when the user closes the program.  The default setting appears to close the program, but it really doesn't.  The program disappears, but is still running in the background.  Click on the following picture to see what to check.  Be sure to check shutdown immediately.  We have had customers leave their computer on overnight, and outside users have uploaded over a trillion bytes of data without our customers even knowing it.

The following screen shows that Limewire is running as a background process, and the average user would never know it.  The system monitor application is brought up by pressing Ctrl, Alt, and Delete simultaneously.
